Sierra Leone national skipper Umaru Bangura is out to make the Swiss Pokal Cup his second winners’ medal at FC Zurich.

FC Zurich will take on BSC Young Boys on Sunday, May 27th, 2018, at 14:00 in the “Stade de Suisse” (the home stadium of BSC Young Boys).

Bangura, 30, who was in the Zurich side that defeated Grasshoppers 2-1 in the semi-final is hoping his side overcome Young Boys and claim his second medal in Switzerland.

“This is a competition that is very important for the club,” the Sierra Leone skipper told Football Sierra Leone.

“It’s very important we are playing in the finals. Winning it will be another achievement for everyone at the club.

“I hope we can win it for the fans as well, we have the best fan based in the country – they deserve something special.”

Bangura added, “I was privileged to be part of the side that helps the club gain promotion back to the Top-flight last season.”

Young Boys have defeated FC Zurich twice this season and is going to be a very cracking contest.

Zurich has won the Swiss Super League 12 times and the Swiss Cup nine times. While their Cup final host has won 11 Swiss top-tier title and six Swiss Cups.

The Young Boys are the current Swiss Super League leaders 11 points ahead of FC Basel.

Zurich sits fourth after thrashing third place team FC St. Gallen 4-0 on Wednesday.

In August 2016, Bangura signed a three years contract with Swiss side, since then he has been a pivotal figure in the Zurich club automatic promotion back to the Swiss top flight.

Bangura scored his first and only league goal in Zurich 5-0 thumping of Wohlen at the Niedermatten Stadium on Sunday 2 October 2016.

History

FC Zurich won its first national championship in the season 1901/1902. Between 1924 and 2009, 11 more national championship titles followed and the club won the Swiss Cup 8 times between 1966 and 2014.

The latest major highlight was the win of the 9th Swiss Cup title in 2016.

Due to its national success, FC Zurich was also given the opportunity to participate in various UEFA competitions and thus prove itself internationally as well.

In the 1960’s and 1970’s, the club enjoyed noteworthy success in each of the three European club competitions. Particularly, it has to be highlighted that the club reached the semi-final of the European Cup of the Champions twice.

In 1964, only the famous team of Real Madrid managed to stop FC Zurich on their way to the final and, in 1977, English record champions Liverpool FC beat FC Zurich in the semi-final after the Swiss had already eliminated famous opponents such as Glasgow Rangers and Dynamo Dresden from the competition.

FC Zurich has also been continuously supplying players for the Swiss-A national team and various international youth sides throughout its entire club history.
