Sierra Leone female National team, Sierra Queens, were paid their WAFU Zone A allowances five months after the tournament was hosted in-country.

The Sierra Leone Football Association, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, announced the news on Saturday.

Senegal won the maiden edition of the West Africa Football Union, (WAFU) Women’s Cup after thrashing Mali 3-0 at the Makeni Wusum Stadium in March.

Host Sierra Leone was knocked out after their opening three draws in the group stage against Cape Verde, Guinea and winners Senegal.

“Each of the twenty-three players received an unprecedented sum of Nineteen Million, Five Hundred and Twenty Four Thousand Leones (Le 19,524,000) which is the exact equivalent of Two Thousand US Dollars ($2,000). The Head Coach and his entire Technical Staff were also beneficiaries of the said payment,” SLFA said in a statement.

The FA further confirmed that the payment process was conducted by the Accounting Department of the Ministry of Sports headed by Mr Adonis Kanu under the supervision of the Deputy Minister of Sports Hon. Kai Lawrence Mbayo, the Permanent Secretary Mr Adikallie Samura and the SLFA General Secretary Mr Christopher Kamara.
