Augustine Williams rescues point for Charleston Battery

Sierra Leone International Augustine Williams scored sixth of the USL Championship season to help Charleston Battery earn a point against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday.

Williams, 24, once again was on the scoresheet as they came from behind to share spoils 1-1 at Al Lang Stadium.

Tampa Bay scored through Leonardo Fernandes in the first half, but Charleston drew parity from Williams’ 63rd-minute close-range.

The Battery secured their first point against the Rowdies since 2020 in what was a continuation of strong performances for the Black and Yellow.

Williams was pleased with the result as he commended the squad for their development, as shown in their performance against Tampa Bay on the road.

“To come here against one of the best teams in the league and earn a point – it’s an amazing feeling because of how much we were grinding,” said Williams. “It’s a big step forward and it was excellent collective work.”

Augustus Kargbo bursting with pride after first Sierra Leone goal

Augustus Kargbo bursting with pride after first Sierra Leone goal

Sierra Leone Italy-based attacker Augustus Kargbo was positively bursting with pride after the attacker helped revive their comeback against Guinea Bissau on Monday.

The Crotone player dribbled to create space off his marker to score his first international goal for Sierra Leone in the 77th minute at the General Lansana Conté stadium in Group A matchday two of the African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Musa Nohad Kamara drew parity for Sierra Leone in the 87th minute to rescue a vital point against 9-man Djurtus.

When answering questions from this medium afterwards, Kargbo said: “It was a proud moment for me,  my family. I’m happy to have scored my first Sierra Leone goal donning the Green, White and Blue jersey.”

“I was over the moon, especially in front of my family and the fans at the stadium. One of those feelings I can’t explain.” It was raw emotion, although not the result we wanted, it was a point that kept our hopes alive,” Kargbo told footballsierraleone.net.

The goal was no more than Kargbo deserved for his brilliant efforts as a substitute.

Against Nigeria, he was brought on for Mua Noad Kamara in the 2-1 defeat at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Thursday.

The Leone Stars of Sierra Leone’s next Afcon outing in the qualifiers is against Sao Tome in September this year.

Nigeria secured six points after their opening g two victories, Guinea Bissau on four points, Sierra Leone on one point and Sao Tome with no point after two matches in the race to Ivory Coast.

Augustine Williams nets fifth of the season in Battery’s USL win

Sierra Leone international striker Augustine Williams was on target in Battery’s Champions 3-0 win over Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium.

First-half goals by Augustine Williams, Andrew Booth and Romario Piggott were enough for the home side as they held on for their second win of the season.

Williams, 24, accounted for his fifth of the season in the second minutes of the match. The victory capped off Pride Night at Patriots Point as the home crowd celebrated early and often throughout the evening.

The striker took to Twitter to express his satisfaction. “Massive 3 points in front of our home crowd. The boys were definitely buzzing tonight. Now we rest and get ready for the next one,” he noted.

The victory is Charleston’s biggest win of the season and second clean sheet of 2022.

Standing second from bottom, Battery will look to build on the win with a tricky away contest against Tampa Bay Rowdies on June 18 and FC Tulsa on June 25 before returning to Patriots Point for a midweek matchup against Atlanta United 2.

Bittersweet for Jonathan Morsay after first S/Leone goal

Bittersweet for Jonathan Morsay after first S/Leone goal

Greek Super League club Panetolikos winger Jonathan Morsay was delighted to net his first international goal for Sierra Leone but disappointed with the result at the MOK Abiola Stadium on Thursday.

Sierra Leone opened their African Cup of Nations 2023 qualifying campaign against Three-times African Champions Nigeria. A contest Morsay says Sierra Leone should take a lot of positive ahead of the next match in the group.

Morsay, 24, timely placed his header to beat goalkeeper Francis Uzoho to give Leone Stars the lead in the 11th minute.

Goals from Everton’s Alex Iwobi and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen saw the Super Eagles come from behind to register their first win over Sierra Leone in the last three meetings.

The 2-1 victory at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium was new coach Jose Peseiro’s first in three matches since his appointment.

“I was delighted to score my first goal in an official match for Sierra Leone – unfortunately, the goal was not enough for a win,” Morsay told FootballSierraLeone.Net after the tie in Abuja.

“We are obviously sad as we cannot get anything from this match, but we played well. In some parts of the game, I thoughts we played better than Nigeria. A lot of positives we can take going into the next match against Guinea-Bissau.”

“Our focus is now on the next match. We can take a lot of good things from this match onto the next qualifying game to improve our performance.”

Morsay, born in Sweden, made his debut for Sierra Leone in Turkey in a 3-0 international friendly defeat against Togo on 24 March 2022.

Sierra Leone returns to matchday two of the qualifiers against Guinea Bissau Djurtus at the Stade General Lansana Conte in Conakry on Monday.
