Standing ovation for Edwards’ teenage star Musa Bangura

On February 28th, in Kono, Musa Bangura, a 15-year-old student of St. Edward’s Secondary School received a standing ovation from his schoolmates for his goal of the match. 

Musa played a crucial role in the squad that defeated Diamond Stars in Kono after being selected by Head Coach John Dominic Konneh.

The Result moved the May Park boys to seventh in the first round of the Sierra Leone Premier League standings.

He showed off his dazzling football skills and produced a Man of the Match performance, leading Old Edwardians to victory with a 1-0 score at the Koidu City playing field.

Coach Konneh praised Musa’s attitude and dedication, while Principal Wyse expressed delight with his performance.

Asst. Team Manager Peters presented Musa with a token of appreciation and encouraged him to focus on both football and studies.

Bo Rangers beat Bhantal to maintain top spot

On Saturday, Bo Rangers FC secured a 2-0 victory against Bhantal FC in a highly contested first-round final Sierra Leone league match at the Southern Arena Stadium in Bo City. 

Mohamadu Lamin scored for the host in the opening two minutes before Yusuf Sesay doubled the host lead in the 75th-minute crucial tie in the race for top place.

John Keister’s side displayed an exceptional performance, leaving the visiting side unable to secure anything from the tie. Despite displaying great determination, the visitors were unable to break the host’s resolute defence.

The reigning and defending champions remain top of the table with 37 points – extended their lead by 6 points after their crucial win.

FC Kallon is in second on 32 points – while Bhantal FC is in 3rd position with 31 points.

Both sets of fans witnessed an exciting clash between two top-tier teams, with Bo Rangers FC ultimately coming out on top with a well-deserved victory. 

The victory cements Bo Rangers’ position at the top of the table, while Bhantal FC will take the time to regroup and prepare for their upcoming matches with renewed determination.

Sierra Leone edge past Liberia in U17 Women’s Cup in Kenema

Sierra Leone’s U17 girls demonstrated their potential as they defeated their Liberian counterpart 2-1 in the 2024 Women’s Cup in Kenema. 

The Sierra Leone Football Association and Ram Kay Football Club’s collaborative efforts to advance women’s football were on display in a captivating performance that enthralled the spectators.

Adama Mansaray opened the scoring for Sierra Leone in the 12th minute, followed by Adama Kamara who doubled their lead in the 25th minute, asserting their dominance in the game.

Despite Liberia’s U-17 team’s efforts to level the playing field, they were only able to score one goal, which came from Lewis Brown in the 66th minute, bringing the score to 2-1.

The competition continues today as the Sierra Leone senior women’s team – the Sierra Queens takes on Liberia U20 at the Kenema playing field in Eastern Province.

SLFA reveals Fifa listed 2024 Sierra Leonean Referees

Ten Sierra Leonean referees, including four women and six men, have been selected for the 2024 list of FIFA international referees. The announcement was made at the federation’s secretariat on Tuesday.

The FIFA selected referees are Precious A.E. Amara, Ibrahim Bah, Michael Conteh, Fatmata Mansaray, and Musa Allieu Sandy as assistant referees, and Mohamed K. Koroma, Alhaji Musa Kabia, Umu Marrah, Rashid M. Conteh, and Aminata Fullah as central referees.

Vice President 1 Harold Nat-Johnson expressed great delight at the rapid growth of female referees in Sierra Leone, noting that the country previously did not have a quartet of female referees but now boasts four, including two centre referees and two assistant referees.

“We are proud of the progress our referees have made,” said Nat-Johnson. “Their selection for the FIFA list is a testament to their dedication and skill.” He assured the referees of the federation’s unwavering support for their welfare and growth, promising more courses to be conducted across the country at all levels.

The unveiling ceremony was attended by acting General Secretary Mohamed Benson Bawoh, Executive Committee member Brima Jalloh, Chairman of the Referees Committee Alhaji M.A Sesay, Head of the Referees department Franklyn Angel Foray Marah, and the Technical Director Ibrahim Bah.

Their presence underscored the SLFA’s commitment to developing referees in Sierra Leone and ensuring they receive the necessary support and training to excel at the international level.

Sierra Leone beat Liberia in U20 Zonal Tournament

Sierra Leone National U20 team, the Shooting Stars, won their first match in the Zonal U20 Tournament against Liberia in Monrovia, thanks to a sensational finish by Alieu Adjust Kamara. 

Kamara was substituted in the second half to impact the team’s approach, and he scored the only goal of the game as he helped his team to a 1-0 victory.

The youngster has improved since joining the U-20 team. He scored a perfect finish in the 90+3 minute, thanks to a brilliant assist by Samba Juma Bah.

His development as a player is evident in his ability to make meaningful contributions to the team’s success, and his performance earned him recognition as the man of the match.

Coach Mohamed Lamin Kamara praised his team’s disciplined approach and hard work that led to the desired result. 

He added that the final match on Sunday, 25th February 2024, at the Samuel K. Doe Stadium – will be another tough battle, but he remains optimistic about winning.

Shooting Stars currently have five points out of three matches played with two goals and one conceded.

Sierra Leone U20 to adopt new tactic against Liberia

The head coach of Sierra Leone U-20 (Shooting Stars), Mohamed Lamin Kamara, will set his team to use different tactics and approaches in their match day three against the Liberia U-20 in the ongoing Zonal Tournament in Monrovia, Liberia. 

After their two opening draws against Liberia, Kamara is confident his team has demonstrated their potential to achieve better results in the remaining encounters. He is optimistic that their performances will lead to more goals and better outcomes.

In today’s tie, he wants his team to focus on attacking and effectively converting chances into goals, as they have been practising during their training sessions.

Despite acknowledging the strength and coordination of the Liberia U-20 side, Kamara is confident that his team will get a good result in the upcoming matches on Saturday and Sunday.

SWASAL North, Makeni Council to revive Mayor Trophy

Representatives from the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL) – Northern Region Branch and the Mayor of the Makeni City Council, Abubakar Lamtales Kamara, recently held a meeting to discuss the revival of the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy. –  By: Alusine Rehme Wilson

During the meeting, Abubakarr Lamtales Kamara expressed his excitement about SWASAL’s work and promised to fully cooperate in the revamp and sustainability of the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy, which has been on hiatus for the past five years. 

He also affirmed the Council’s commitment to the initiative and promised to inform other staff about the meeting over the trophy’s second edition.

According to Alfred Zico Kabia, the Acting Organizing Secretary of SWASL North, the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy is an annual championship that is free from political influences. 

This tournament has the potential to unite communities and has previously produced players who now compete in top leagues,  national and international.

The inaugural edition of the tournament took place in 2018. However, due to challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the former mayor’s extensive medical and work-related travels – there were no subsequent editions. 

For the second edition and beyond, SWASAL North hopes to promote soccer, showcase talent, empower sports enthusiasts, enhance community compliance, and boost revenue generation for Makeni City Council through the Sports Writers Makeni Mayoral Trophy.

Liberia & Sierra Leone share points in U20 Opening match

The U-20 teams of Sierra Leone (Shooting Stars) and Liberia (Lone Stars U20) got off to a stuttering start with a 0-0 at the Samuel K. Doe Stadium on Sunday.

The Zonal U20 opening contest ended in a goalless draw as both teams displayed strong performances but failed to convert their attacking opportunities.

After the match, the head coach of Shooting Stars, Mohamed Lamin Kamara, expressed optimism about his team’s chances in the remaining three against Lone Stars.

He emphasized that they will work on improving their goal-scoring chances and set pieces during training sessions.

At the end of the match, Mohammed Fofanah, also known as “Fastest” of Diamond Stars, won the Man of the Match Award for his outstanding performance.

The tournament continues on Tuesday as Sierra Leone hosts Liberia in search of their first win.

Sierra Leone’s U-20 Shooting Stars completed their first training session in preparation for their upcoming friendly against Liberia, which will take place on Sunday, February 18th, at the SKD Stadium.

The coach, Mohammed Lamin Kamara, expressed satisfaction with his team’s condition, stating that there were no injuries to worry about.

Despite their positive results in previous Sierra Leone friendlies, Kamara emphasized the importance of not underestimating their Liberian counterparts, as the Liberian U-20 squad is a worthy opponent.

The Sierra Leone men’s national football team has climbed up one position in the latest FIFA rankings and now stands at 126th place, up from 127th.

The Sierra Leone men’s national football team has climbed up one position in the latest FIFA rankings and now stands at 126th place, up from 127th.

In Africa, the team holds the 35th spot and trails behind strong contenders such as Morocco, Senegal, and Nigeria.

The team began their qualifying journey for the 2026 World Cup in November 2023, securing a goalless draw against Ethiopia under the guidance of Coach Amidu Karim.

In Africa, Ivory Coast coach Emerse Fae praised his team as “miracle survivors” after they won the Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Nigeria 2-1 in the final. T

The Ivory Coast team completed one of the greatest turnarounds in major tournament history. They are the first host country to win the Cup of Nations since Egypt in 2006, despite almost going out in the group stage.

As a result, the Elephants have climbed ten places in the new FIFA ranking and are now ranked 39th globally.

After reaching the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria has moved up 14 places in the ranking and now holds the 28th spot.

Angola has climbed higher than any other team, moving up 24 places in the ranking and now holds the 93rd spot. They are the biggest climbers in the world ranking.

In the World, Argentina still holds the top spot after winning the World Cup in Qatar, while France and England are in second and third place, respectively.
