Hosts Morocco record first win in Women’s Cup of Nations

Morocco overcame the Congo DR in a thrilling 4-2 victory on Wednesday evening, a match of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2024.

For the hosts, who had drawn with Zambia in their opening game earlier in the week, this amazing performance was essential.

Early in the match, DR Congo stunned the home favourites with a quick opener in the 6th minute, bringing life to it. Merveille Kanjinga finished with assurance after Naomie Kabakaba’s well-weighted through ball was delivered.

A first-half double by star forward Ghizlane Chebbak propelled Morocco to a 2-1 advantage at halftime. Flavine Mawete scored a goal in the 70th minute to equalise for DR Congo.

Chebbak, however, quickly helped Imène El Ghazouani to reclaim Morocco’s lead at 3-2. Then Anissa Lahmari won a penalty, which Yasmin M’Rabet converted in the 83rd minute.

Although DR Congo presented late opportunities, Morocco’s defence stood steady, guaranteeing a robust start to their WAFCON 2024 campaign.
