Sierra Leone line-up friendlies for World Cup qualifiers

Veteran English defender Curtis Davies has been drafted to provisional head coach Amidu Karim’s 25-man sqaud for friendlies in Morocco.

The Cheltenham Town defender is set to join eleven (11) other foreign-based players for friendlies against Benin and Somalia in Casablanca, Morocco.

Sierra Leone to kick start the groundwork for World Cup 2026 qualifiers with matches against Benin and Somalia. The Leone Stars will take on the Cheetahs of Benin on the 14th before hosting the Ocean Stars of Somalia on the 17 October.

All engagements are for preparatory assessments for November’s World Cup qualification. 

Somalia are in Group G alongside Algeria, Guinea, Uganda, Mozambique and Botswana. Benin is in Group C against Nigeria, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Lesotho in the race to the 2026 World Cup. 

The Leone Stars defeated Benin 1-0 in their last meeting through a Kei Kamara spot kick during the AFCON race to Cameroon in Guinea in June 2021 as Sierra Leone secured a place at the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 1996.

Ranked 124 in the global standings, Leone Stars’ journey to qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in the USA, Mexico and Canada will begin in November 2023. 

Coach Karim and the technical team will use these games in the North African region to assess the squad ahead of his first major task against Group A opponents Ethiopia and powerhouse Egypt in November.

The others in Group A are Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau and Djibouti in the race to the 2026 World Cup.

Leone Stars last outing in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying, Group Stage A final match ended in 2-1 defeat to Guinea-Bissua at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in September.

Semi-final defeat for Daroma’s Tacoma Defiance

Frank Daroma’s Tacoma Defiance suffered Western Conference semifinal 1-0 defeat to Austin FC II on Sunday night at Starfire Stadium.

The Sierra Leone-born, who has been a pivotal player for Tacoma Defiance, played the full throttle of the match.

Valentin Noël’s game-winning goal was the decider in an intense affair at Starfire Stadium. Austin FC II advanced to meet Rapids 2 in the Western Conference Final.

Noël found the end of a David Rodriguez cross in the 82nd minute, directing his shot powerfully into the back of the net. Austin FC II took control after a Defiance red card in the 69th minute. Austin FC II goalkeeper Damian Las made three saves to preserve a clean sheet.

The result concludes the 2023 MLS NEXT Pro campaign for Defiance, who won the Pacific Division and finished second in the Western Conference during the regular season.

Signed on January 27, 2023, Daroma, 22, started 57 of 64 appearances for Las Vegas Lights FC over the 2021-2022 USL Championship campaigns before joining Tacoma Defiance.

“It’s been quite a journey,” said Defiance Assistant Coach Michael Morris In a pre-match interview. 

“We haven’t been beaten in the last seven games,” said Morris. “We’ve been really consistent with the chances we’re trying to create and finishing in those specific moments.”

Last season, they were beaten in the same stage of the MLS NEXTPro conference semifinals of launched. The team closed out last season in a 2-1 Western Conference Final loss against St. Louis CITY 2, preventing them from advancing to the Final.

Benin confirm World Cup qualifying prep Sierra Leone friendly

Beninese Football Association (BFA) have confirmed a friendly with Sierra Leone in Casablanca as part of their World Cup preparation this month.

Provisional boss Amidu Karim to start his groundwork against Benin in Casablanca, Morocco.

A second friendly is expected to be announced by the Sierra Leone Football Association. Niger was supposed to face Leone Stars, but they have rescheduled to play Somalia and Libya instead.

Egypt’s coach Rui Vitoria eyes 2026 World Cup spot

The Pharaohs of Egypt’s head coach, Rui Vitoria, has hinted at his ambition for the 2026 FIFA World Cup spot.

The draw for the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup finals placed Egypt in Group A with five teams: Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Guinea-Bissau, and Djibouti.

The Pharaohs’ boss, Vitoria, 53, who was named head coach of the national team in July 2022, has been speaking ahead of friendly matches this month.

After he named his final squad for the training camp in the UAE friendlies against Zambia and Algeria, he said, “My goal, with my current contract expiring in 2026, is to qualify for the FIFA World Cup.” 

Egypt will participate in two friendly matches, the first against Zambia on 12 October and the second against Algeria on 16 October.

“Playing against Algeria and Zambia provides strong tests for the players, with two significant games scheduled within a 72-hour period,” Vitoria added.

“We always seek challenging matches during preparations for the African Cup of Nations finals and the World Cup qualifiers,” the Portuguese coach emphasized.

Under Vitoria’s guidance, the Pharaohs secured their place in the 2023 African Cup of Nations and will commence their 2026 World Cup qualifiers campaign in November.

CAF to conduct Inter-club draw in South Africa on Friday

The Confederation of African Football (CAF), have confirmed that the official draw for the Group Stages of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup is set to be held on Friday, 06 October 2023, in Johannesburg, South Africa.  

CAF say the draw will start at 12h00 GMT (14h00 Johannesburg), with the CAF Confederation Cup draw before the elite inter-club Champions League at 13h00 GMT (15h00 Johannesburg).  

It will be live on the CAF Official website, CAFONLINE.com and CAF YouTube (CAFTV).  

Thirty-two (32) teams await their fate, and sixteen (16) from each competition have now secured their respective places in the group stages.  

The draw procedure is expected to be communicated soon by CAF.

Young defender Amara Nallo impressive for Liverpool U21

West Ham academy graduate Amara Nallo, who joined Liverpool last month, has been a pivotal player for the Red’s U21. 

The youngster signed a five-year deal and was integrated straight into Liveropool’s Premier League 2 side.

Since his move to Liverpool, he has already featured in all the U21 matches this campaign.

Football Sierra Leone understands that Liverpool has paid a significant transfer fee to complete the move of the 16-year-old centre-back. 

Liverpool wrote on their website, “Amara Nallo is a centre-half who signed for Liverpool FC from West Ham United in September 2023. He is a strong left-sided defender who is comfortable bringing the ball out from the back. Nallo started Academy life with the U18s.”

He is expected to sign a professional contract upon turning 17 in November this year, a move that Liverpool could capitalize on, adding another gem to their youth ranks.

Wydad Casablanca beat Hafia to progress

Continental giants Wydad Casablanca walloped Guinean side Hafia 3-0 in their second round second leg CAF Champions League tie to progress at the Mohamed V Stadium in Casablanca on Saturday. 

Following their 1-1 draw in the Guinean capital, Wydad knew they had to do the needful if they are to join other continental giants in the group stage draw.

Wydad Casablanca thrased Hafia’s 3-0 second leg win to progress on a 4-1 aggregate success.

Yahia Attiyat Allah and Hamdou Elhouni struck in the first half before Abdellah Haimoud completed the job after the break.

Wydad extends their remarkable run of reaching the group stage to nine consecutive seasons as they chase a third Champions League title.

CR Belouizdad puts Sierra Leone side Rangers to the sword

CR Belouizdad Cameroonian striker Leonel Wanda scored a hattrick as the Algerian side defeated Sierra Leone Champions Bo Rangers 3-1 in Algeria on Monday.

The visitors came out of the blocks early with a 9-minute goal from Ibrahim Turay’s superb strike from the edge of the box at the Stade Olympique d’Oran.

Rangers took their lead to the 78th minute before the home side was awarded a spot kick converted by Leonel Wanda after Azzi was fouled in the area.

Two minutes later, Wanda doubled their lead through a one-to-one pass before slotting past the Rangers keeper. Wand’s hattrick was completed in the 89th minute after he collected a pass from the right.

As a result, the Algerian side qualified for the Champions League Group stage with a 6-2 aggregate scoreline from both legs.

Ghanaians dash Kallon Confederation Cup group stage dreams

Sierra Leone CAF Confederation Cup representative FC Kallon has been eliminated by Ghanaian side Dreams FC after a 1-1 full-time scoreline at the SKD stadium in Liberia On Saturday.

Dreams took an early lead through Agyenim Boateng in the 3rd minute from the penalty spot. Kallon, who was on the verge of making history, rallied for an equaliser late on to make it 1-1 but was a little too late.

The Ghanain side won the first leg 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium. As a result, they made history of their own by reaching the competition group stage for the first time with a 3-2 aggregate over two legs.

They become the second Ghanaian side to have reached this stage of the competition since Asante Kotoko in 2019.

Dreams went on to qualify unbeaten against Guinean side Milo FC and FC Kallon in both preliminary matches.

 No Sierra Leonean club have reached the group stage of the second-tier competition of African club football since it was introduced in 2004.

In 2004, CAF merged the African Cup Winners’ Cup created in 1975 with the CAF Cup introduced in 1992 to form a new competition called the Confederation Cup, which has since been considered the second African club competition.

Tricky away Champions League contest for Bo Rangers

Having suffered a heavy first leg 3-1 defeat to their Algerian counterparts, Bo Rangers travelled to face Chabab Riadhi Belouizdad for a place in the competition group stages.

Sierra Leone Champions Bo Rangers went down 3-1 at home to CR Belouizdad in the first leg of the second preliminary round of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League on Sunday, September 17 2023, at the Southern Arena.

As a result, Bo Rangers face a giant second-leg task as the return fixture is set to be played at the Oran Olympic Stadium in Algeria on September 30 2023.

Saturday’s meeting will be their fourth after both teams wrestled in this competition last season, but the Algerians again came off top with a 3-0 aggregate over two legs.

In the first leg at the Southern Arena, Sierra Leone back-back Champions started well when they capitalised on the 11-minute chance through Abu Komeh.

This will be the kind of start coach Alhaji Foray will be hoping for if they are to survive the wave in the Algerian city.

The Southern Province outfit departed Sierra Leone with a 23-man sqaud on Wednesday, September 27th, en route to Guinea for Algeria, highly motivated and determined to deliver a respectable result.
