Ghana and Wales played to a 1-1 draw in their first-ever meeting at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday in Carlos Queiroz’s debut as head coach of the Black Stars.
Caleb Yirenkyi scored for Ghana in the second half, putting them ahead, but Lewis Koumas equalised for Wales with a header in the third minute of stoppage time.
Wales started the game stronger and could have scored early on. However, Ghana’s goalkeeper, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, made two outstanding saves to deny Daniel James.
After weathering the storm, Ghana began to create chances. Jordan Ayew almost scored after a mistake by Wales’ goalkeeper, Karl Darlow, but his shot was saved. Marvin Senaya also tested Darlow with a deflected volley.
In the first half, a late challenge from Thomas Partey led to protests from the Welsh bench for a second yellow card. But instead of a card, the referee gave him a warning.
Queiroz made changes at halftime, bringing on Kwasi Sibo, Ernest Nuamah, Brandon Thomas-Asante, and goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. The new players energised Ghana, and they soon threatened Wales. Yirenkyi scored after a well-coordinated team move. His first shot hit the bar, but he quickly tapped in the rebound.
Ghana looked poised for victory, but in the closing moments, Wales pushed forward and scored. Neco Williams crossed the ball, and Koumas timed his jump perfectly to head in the equaliser.
After the match, Queiroz assessed the game. He noted that Ghana needed to improve their teamwork and decision-making, but was pleased with its progress given the limited training time. He praised the players for following his game plan and saw potential in Yirenkyi, calling him a player with a bright future.
Ghana will stay in Cardiff to train before heading to the United States for another friendly match ahead of their first game in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
